Meta buys 49 percent stake in Scale AI for $14.3 billion

Scale AI says its CEO, Alexandr Wang, will join Meta to lead a new team focused on artificial general intelligence

Meta has agreed to buy a 49% stake in Scale AI for $14.3 billion, valuing the data labeling company at $29 billion, according to people familiar with the deal.

Scale AI said its CEO, Alexandr Wang, will join Meta to lead a new team focused on artificial general intelligence.

The deal comes as Meta expands its efforts in AI while facing antitrust scrutiny over its earlier acquisitions of WhatsApp and Instagram. Meta, founded in 2004 as TheFacebook by Mark Zuckerberg and others at Harvard, changed its name to Meta Platforms in 2021.
